去年参加过旅行的一位CBS记者的经历是，由于浮标从发射平台上滑落，一次试潜被取消。在正式下潜后，潜水艇与水面船只的通讯被中断，导致潜水艇未能找到“泰坦尼克号”。（水面船只应负责通过文字信息，引导潜水艇前往“泰坦尼克号”残骸的所在地。）
乘客锡瑞尼克·保尔多塔表示：“我们迷路了。我们迷路了两个半小时。”
参与此次旅程的CBS记者大卫·波格形容这艘潜水艇“制作粗糙，偷工减料，用建筑管材做载压水舱。”
海洋之门探险公司（OceanGate Expeditions）CEO斯托克顿·拉什却反驳这种观点称：“有一些事情必须说清楚。潜艇是我们与波音（Boeing）、NASA和华盛顿大学（University of Washington）合作的成果，并不是粗制滥造的产物。即使出现其他任何故障，例如推进器失灵、照明系统故障等，你依旧是安全的。”事实狠狠打了他的脸。
